rider training in ontario...

There are many opportunities to get professional training for motorcyclists. Most in Ontario are designed to meet requirements for drivers' licensing upgrades to M2, or for more experienced riders, to M. This site is designed to give information about Ontario's Graduated Licensing for motorcyclists, and about other training options.

Basic: Learning Curves
We recommend this basic licensing course in order to move from M1 to M2. It's designed for new and returning motorcyclists. You will learn basic handling and safety skills, qualify for the Ministry of Transportation's M2 licence, and qualify for personal insurance savings. Typically, training takes place in one weekend over 17 hours, though other schedules are available You will attend a classroom session one evening, ride the various motorcycles Saturday and Sunday, and be tested for the M2 licence on Sunday afternoon.

Gradually more demanding maneuvers and individual coaching will have you handling confidently even simulated traffic emergencies. Among the skills that you will have the opportunity to practice are assertive shifting, push-steering, and threshold braking. Defensive riding tips will make you a safer rider, and a more conscientious car driver. Requirements are a learner's M1 permit from DriveTest, safety gear, and a capacity for strenuous fun.

Advanced: M2X
We recommend this program to get you from M2 to M. The rider with some licensed experience on a motorcycle will enjoy riding his or her own bike, with the instructors, on public roads. This 10-hour training course can be scheduled on a weekend, or a weekday. A classroom on defensive riding requirements, and 6 hours of coached riding will prepare you for the test of conducting yourself alone in traffic - the instructor follows you for about one hour while giving radio instuctions. Among the fine arts you will practice are situational awareness, group riding, lane control, and overtaking. Requirements are that you have held an M2 licence for at least 1.5 years, and that you bring a street-legal motorcycle and safety gear.
